Islamic History History, which can be described in the briefest terms as “the science of the past” and should be understood as “a systematic way of thinking that guides people toward sound conclusions,” is an ongoing process of dialogue between the past and the present. Within this perspective, the courses offered in the undergraduate program by the Department of Islamic History aim to provide students with knowledge of the origins and sources of Islamic historiography, the era of the Prophet Muhammad and the Rightly Guided Caliphs, as well as the institutions, cultures, and civilizations of the Muslim and Turkish states established throughout various regions of the Islamic world over the course of history. Ultimately, the program seeks to equip students with the ability to evaluate historical events according to academic standards, to develop a sound understanding of the past, and to build the future upon solid foundations informed by historical experience.
